Nightly Actions for Monday, March 27th, 2017

UPDATE - This Week

In addition to being a night owl activist, I'm also a graduate student, and this is the final week of the spring quarter for me. I have two big final projects due at the end of the week, so I need to take some time off to work on them. I may pop in intermittently if something important comes up. Otherwise, if you need some daily calls to action, I highly recommend my colleagues in the Action Alliance. They include daily emails, weekly emails, blogs, apps, Facebook groups, and more for all of your resistance needs. You can find them here: http://www.actionalliance.co

I felt like I had to post today because we have some important work to do, but this will probably be my only blog post this week. Next week, I'll be on spring break, so I'll be back to blogging every week night.

URGENT - Online Privacy

Last week, the Senate voted to dismantle the FCC's broadband-privacy protections, which prevent Internet service providers from sharing your private information without your consent. The House is scheduled to vote on this resolution, S.J. Res. 24, tomorrow. Use one of the following links to call your representative and tell them to vote against it:

URGENT - Gorsuch

The Senate is still holding hearings for Gorsuch this week. There has been talk of Senate Democrats filibustering his nomination, but not all of them have committed to it. Here's how you can help block Gorsuch's confirmation:
45's Ties to Russia

Last week, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Devin Nunes canceled a planned public hearing with top former national security officials about Russian influence in the 2016 election. This was just a day after it was uncovered that he went straight to the White House with information regarding 45's wiretapping accusations without first consulting the rest of the Committee. Here's how you can help ensure that an independent, nonpartisan investigation is completed.
45's Tax Returns

Tomorrow at 4pm, the House Ways and Means Committee will vote on H. Res. 186, a Resolution of Inquiry directing the Secretary of the Treasury to provide the House of Representatives with 45's complete tax returns. Here's how you can help it get passed:

Now that the Affordable Care Act is safe (for now) and "Don't Care" has been taken off the table, it's time to start demanding single payer healthcare for all. Rep. John Conyers has proposed a a bill called HR 676, which would provide affordable healthcare coverage to every American. Sen. Bernie Sanders is set to propose a similar bill to the Senate. Sign the following petitions to support these bills:

Congress is pushing the private school "choice" agenda by extending the SOAR Reauthorization Act. Reauthorization would fund and expand, with your federal tax dollars, the District of Columbia’s private school voucher program. This program operates with little transparency or accountability, Congress refuses to add protections against discrimination, and every dollar the federal government spends on private school vouchers is less money available to invest in strengthening our public schools. 45's new budget proposal would slash Department of Education funding and call for adding billions to private schools. Here's how you can help protect public schools and stop voucher programs:
  • Border Wall: 45 is trying to stick our nation’s taxpayers with the $21.6 billion bill for his ridiculous border wall, even though more than 60% of Americans oppose its construction and it would be devastating to the environment. Sign this petition to oppose the wall:
  • Legal Counsel Act: Reports from immigrants arrested and detained at airports when 45's first Muslim ban took effect reveal that federal agents denied many people food, water, and access to legal counsel for days. Sen. Kamala Harris and Rep. Pramila Jayapal have introduced the Access to Legal Counsel Act, which would give immigrants detained by federal agents the right to access legal counsel and prohibit immigration officials from denying them food and water. Sign this petition to support the Legal Counsel Act:
Special Elections

Special elections are held before general elections to replace members of Congress who have left their positions for whatever reason. These elections are very important because they are opportunities for us to either flip these seats to blue, or keep them blue, giving us more of an edge against the Republicans in Congress. Here are some upcoming special elections and how you can help.

James Thompson, Kansas
The special election for Kansas's 4th Congressional District is April 11th. Here's how you can help the Democratic candidate, James Thompson, win:
Jon Ossoff, Georgia
The special election for Georgia's 6th Congressional District is April 18th. Here's how you can help the Democratic candidate, Jon Ossoff, win:
Rob Quist, Montana
The special election for Montana's only Congressional District is April 25th. Here's how you can help the Democratic candidate, Rob Quist, win:

REMINDER - Weekends Off

This is your weekly reminder that I'm now taking weekends off, so you won't see my usual early morning posts on Sunday or Monday. If you're missing your daily multivitamin of resistance, check out my fellow members of the Action Alliance here: https://www.actionalliance.co/

BREAKING - Healthcare

Victory! Today, Republicans in Congress pushed for another vote on their plan to repeal and "replace" the Affordable Care Act, but the vote was canceled at the last minute due to a lack of support. Rumors say that 45 planned to move on and forget about healthcare if the vote didn't happen today, and later, Speaker Paul Ryan said that the ACA would be around "for the foreseeable future."

If you called, emailed, faxed, Tweeted, Facebook messaged, or sent a letter to your members of Congress; if you went to a rally, march, town hall, or meeting with your members of Congress; if you signed a petition or shared information on social media, you helped make this happen! Give yourself a big pat on the back! Take a moment to celebrate the death of Trumpcare, or as I liked to call it, "Don't Care." RIP!

Republicans may be the elephants, but we in The Resistance never forget! If they try to attack the ACA again, we'll be ready for them. Be vigilant and open your ears, as my grandmother used to say (Happy birthday, Grandmom!). We might be stuck with 45 for four whole years (hopefully less), so we can't let our guards down. Celebrate this weekend, but be ready to resist again on Monday.

URGENT - Keystone XL Pipeline

45's administration just approved the presidential permit for the Keystone XL pipeline and reversed the rejection of the project under the Obama administration. The pipeline would carry 830,000 barrels of the world's dirtiest oil, tar sands, every day and cause annual greenhouse gas emissions each year equal to 37.7 million cars. It would also would cut directly through Sioux treaty lands and near several other tribal reservations and the Ponca Trail of Tears, yet Tribal Nations in Nebraska and South Dakota have not been properly consulted.

TransCanada, the company behind the Keystone XL, must still get approval to route the pipeline through Nebraska, and the Nebraska Public Service Commission (PSC) is taking public comments now. Here's how you can help stop construction of the pipeline.

Thanks to everyone for your well wishes today! I feel loved! ❤ I'm definitely feeling better and ready to get back to resisting!

BREAKING - Healthcare

Huge news! Today, Republicans in Congress caved to the pressure and "postponed" the vote on their plan to repeal and "replace" the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which I call "Don't Care." How fitting that on the anniversary of the ACA it was upheld once again. To everyone who marched, protested, and called, emailed, faxed, wrote letters, Tweeted, and Facebook messaged your representatives, great work! The day the ACA was passed, a live microphone accidentally picked up Vice President Joe Biden calling it "a big f***ing deal." Today we made another BFD happen.

But our work is not over! The Republicans are likely to try to re-work Don't Care and put it up for a vote again, so we have to keep it up! Here are some ways you can let the House know that we don't want the current or any future versions of Don't Care to be passed. (Note: Some of these links are from yesterday or earlier today and written as if the vote is about to happen, but they're still good to use today!)
Neil Gorsuch

45's nominee for the Supreme Court, Neil Gorsuch, has a long record of opposing reproductive choice and putting corporations before people. His seat should have gone to President Obama's nominee, Merrick Garland, but in an unprecedented move, Republicans in Congress refused to even vote on him! Gorsuch's confirmation hearings began on Monday. Here's how you can help block his nomination.
45's Ties to Russia

Yesterday it was reported that House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes bypassed Democrats and went straight to the White House with information that showed intelligence agencies may have "incidentally" picked up communications of 45's transition team members (while monitoring foreign officials, so... Russia?). This raised questions about Nunes's ability to lead an impartial investigation into 45's Russian ties. Here's how you can help ensure that a thorough, nonpartisan investigation is completed.
45's Budget

This week, 45 unveiled his new budget, which unnecessarily dumps billions into the military while gutting the EPA and other science agencies, public education, public broadcasting, assistance programs for low-income and elderly Americans (like Meals on Wheels), and the arts. Here's how you can help stop it.
  • Call your MoC. Call the Capitol Hill switchboard at 202-224-3121 and enter your ZIP code to be connected to your MoC, then use the script below from re:act to urge them to oppose 45's budget:

My name is [NAME] from [PLACE]. I’m calling [SENATOR/REPRESENTATIVE X] about President Trump’s proposed budget. The current outline will slash funding for the State Department, foreign aid, and every domestic agency — while adding $54B in military spending, when we already spend more than the next seven countries combined. Will [SENATOR/REPRESENTATIVE X] pledge to oppose and fight the outlines of this plan?
  • Email your MoC. Use the following link to email your MoC and urge them to oppose 45's cuts to the EPA: https://engage.us.greenpeace.org/onlineactions/ezFnXSkJOU-OBQVTKJ0aCQ2
  • Sign a petition. Sign the following petitions opposing 45's budget:
North Korea

Last week, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson signaled that 45's administration was prepared to scrap nearly a decade of U.S. policy toward North Korea in favor of a more aggressive effort to eliminate the country’s nuclear weapons program. He warned that preemptive action was "on the table" (?!).

On Tuesday, a North Korean envoy said that the country will pursue "acceleration" of its nuclear and missile programs. This includes developing a "preemptive first strike capability" and an inter-continental ballistic missile (ICBM). Here's how you can help make sure that Tillerson and Congress continue pursuing diplomatic relations with North Korea.
  • Call your MoC. Call the Capitol Hill switchboard at 202-224-3121 and enter your ZIP code to be connected to your MoC, then use the script below from re:act to urge them to evaluate and use all possible diplomatic approaches with North Korea:

My name is [NAME] from [PLACE]. I’m really concerned about Secretary Tillerson’s recent remarks that diplomacy has failed on North Korea. Can I ask [SENATOR/REPRESENTATIVE X] to support any efforts to encourage this administration to evaluate and use all possible diplomatic approaches in regards to North Korea, before considering other actions?
  • Email your MoC and Tillerson. Use the following link to email your MoC and Tillerson and urge them to pursue a diplomatic resolution to the conflict with North Korea:
  • Webinar Recording: On Tuesday, Reproaction hosted a webinar called "Take the Next Step: Self-Esteem, Self-Expression, and Self-Love for Activists," which explored the concept of radical self-love and why it's critical for activists. If you missed it, you can watch a recording of it here: http://reproaction.org/2017/03/14/reproaction-act-and-learn-webinar-321-self-esteem-self-expression-and-self-love-for-activists/
  • LGBTQ+ Issues: 45's administration is trying to remove LGBTQ+ elders from a critically important national survey of older adults that helps the government decide how to spend billions of dollars on senior centers, Meals on Wheels, and other essential elder services. Use the following link to email 45 and tell him that LGBTQ+ elders count:
  • Voting Rights: 45 has repeatedly made false claims of widespread "voter fraud" during the 2016 presidential election. Yesterday, FEC Commissioner Ellen L. Weintraub sent him a letter demanding that he produce evidence of his claims. Co-sign the letter here:
  • Aramis Ayala: Aramis Ayala, the first Black woman state attorney in Florida history, just made a heroic move by refusing to seek the death penalty in any case. Florida Governor Rick Scott responded by removing her from a key case and handing it over to a white prosecutor in another county. Even the victim’s family is in support of Ayala’s decision to not pursue the death penalty. Sign this petition to tell Scott to let Ayala do her job:

Nightly Actions for Tuesday, March 21st, 2017

URGENT - Healthcare

Last night, House Republican leaders released a set of changes to their plan to repeal and "replace" the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which I call "Don't Care," in a last minute bid to win more votes. The changes include allowing states to require Medicaid recipients to work (?!) and to choose a Medicaid block grant over the cap system in the current bill. In a closed-door meeting with House Republicans today, 45 threatened critics of Don't Care by telling them that there would be a political crisis and sweeping electoral defeats if they did not pass the legislation (?!!). The House will vote on the bill on Thursday. Here's how you can help stop it.
45's Ties to Russia

On Monday, FBI Director James Comey confirmed that the FBI is investigating whether members of 45's campaign colluded with Russia to influence the 2016 presidential election. The White House continues to dismiss these claims and insist on investigating the people who leaked the information (??!!). Here's how you can help make sure that a thorough investigation is completed.
45's Budget

This week, we learned about 45's budget proposal, which guts the EPA and other science agencies, assistance programs for low-income and elderly Americans, public broadcasting, and the arts, and dumps billions into the military and attacks on immigrants. Here's how you can help stop this budget:
The Environment
  • Climate Change: In the last week alone, 45 has moved to dismantle the EPA, slash foreign aid programs that help poor people battle climate change, and overturn fuel standards that reduce pollution. Climate change is not just an environmental issue; it's one that puts people's homes and livelihoods at risk by exacerbating poverty. Use this form to email your MoC and demand that they protect programs that help poor people and address climate change:
  • Keystone XL Pipeline: President Obama killed off the climate-wrecking Keystone XL tar sands pipeline over a year and a half ago, but 45 is trying to bring it back to life. TransCanada, the oil company behind the pipeline, has re-submitted its application for the permits needed to begin construction. Now, the State Department will decide whether to let TransCanada move to the next step of the approval process. Use this form to email the State Department and tell them to stop the Keystone XL:
  • 45's Nominees - Jay Clayton, SEC: 45's nominee to chair the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Jay Clayton, is a former Goldman Sachs advisor known as Wall Street's "bailout attorney." Use the following link to call your senators and urge them to oppose Clayton: http://action.citizen.org/p/dia/action4/common/public/?action_KEY=13445
  • Online Privacy: Last October, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) passed rules preventing broadband providers from selling your personal online information to advertisers and other companies without your consent, but now Congress is poised to remove these protections. Sign this petition to tell the Senate to protect our online privacy:

URGENT - Neil Gorsuch

Today, hearings began for Neil Gorsuch's confirmation to the Supreme Court. Gorsuch has a record of opposing reproductive rights and putting corporations before people. His seat should have gone to President Obama's nominee, Merrick Garland, but Republicans in Congress refused to even consider him. Here's how you can help block Gorsuch.
45's Budget

Last week, we learned about 45's anti-immigrant, anti-science, anti-education budget, which proposes to cut funding from public broadcasting, the EPA and other science agencies, and even Meals on Wheels, while pouring funds into the military and attacks on immigrants. Here's how you can help stop 45's budget (by category).

Assistance Programs
The Arts
Public Broadcasting
Healthcare - Affordable Care Act

House leaders plan to vote on the Republican plan to repeal and "replace" the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which I'm calling "Don't Care," on Thursday. The Congressional Budget Office recently found that this new "plan" would cause 24 million Americans to lose their health insurance. As many as 27 Republican representatives have either stated that they will vote against the plan or that they have concerns about it. We need 22 to block it. Here's how you can help stop Don't Care and protect the ACA:

45's proposed budget includes building his ridiculous border wall, funding for more ICE raids and deportations, and beefing up border patrol. His second attempt at a Muslim ban was struck down by two federal judges, but the Justice Department said they plan to appeal one of the rulings. Here's how you can help stop 45's anti-immigrant agenda.
45's Ties to Russia

Today, FBI Director James Comey confirmed that the FBI is investigating Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election, including possible links between 45 and Moscow. He also said that U.S. intelligence agencies agree that Russia's aim evolved into an effort during the election to aid 45 over Hillary Clinton. Here's how you can help keep up the pressure to ensure that a thorough investigation is completed.
The Environment

With a climate-denier running the EPA and 45's budget planning to slash funding, it's clear that our environment is under attack. Here are some ways you can help protect it.
Upcoming Events

45's Budget

Yesterday, we learned about 45's disastrous budget that slashes funds for the environment, science, public broadcasting, and Meals on Wheels while dumping millions into military spending and attacking immigrants. Here are some ways you can help fight against this budget.
Healthcare - Affordable Care Act

Yesterday morning, the Republican plan to repeal and "replace" the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which I call "Don't Care," passed another House committee (?!) despite strong opposition from Congressional Republicans, Democrats, the medical community, and several conservative organizations. Currently, 19 House Republicans have stated that they will vote against the bill. We need 22 to beat it. Here's how you can help.
Immigration - ICE Raids

According to a new poll, 60% of Americans say that the government's top priority in dealing with undocumented immigrants should be developing a plan to allow them to become legal residents. Only 13% said they supported 45's plans to round up and deport undocumented immigrants. Overall, 58% said they're concerned that deportation efforts will go too far and result in deportation of people who haven't committed serious crimes. Here's how you can help fight against 45's ICE raids.
Upcoming Events
  • Republican Climate Resolution: Republican members of the House have introduced the Republican Climate Resolution, which supports the need to take action to address climate change. Use the following link to Tweet your support for the Resolution and email your representative to ask them to cosponsor it: https://citizensclimatelobby.org/republican-climate-resolution/
  • Voting Rights: In Kansas, a County Election Commissioner has made some changes to local voting procedures that could limit access to the polls. On April 11th, this county will hold a special election to replace former Congressman Mike Pompeo. Sign this petition to urge the Kansas Secretary of State to release information about these changes:
  • Steve King: This week, Representative Steve King Tweeted, "Culture and demographics are our destiny. We can't restore our civilization with somebody else's babies." This is a well-known white nationalist phrase touting white civilization as a "superior civilization." Sign this petition to demand that Speaker Paul Ryan remove King from his leadership position in the House Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice:
  • 45's Bogus Wiretapping Claims: 45 has repeatedly claimed that President Obama has been wiretapping his offices, but refuses to present any evidence of these claims. Nightly Actions for Thursday, March 16th, 2017

URGENT - Neil Gorsuch

Senate confirmation hearings for 45's nominee for the Supreme Court, Neil Gorsuch, will begin on Monday. Gorsuch has sided with corporations who claim religious beliefs allow them to deny access to birth control and has sided with a governor who wanted to defund Planned Parenthood. Gorsuch's penchant for ruling in favor or powerful corporate and institutional interests over the rights and interests of workers and everyday Americans could impact the law in a way that would hurt countless Americans for generations to come. Here's how you can help block him.

Affordable Care Act
Yesterday, House Speaker Paul Ryan admitted that his healthcare bill, which I refer to as "Don't Care," must change in order to pass the House. He told reporters that the bill would "incorporate feedback" in response to the Congressional Budget Office's analysis, which found that the bill would cause 24 million Americans to lose their health insurance. Here's how you can help stop Don't Care and save the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
The Don't Care plan includes federally defunding Medicaid expansion in 2020. Currently, Medicaid accounts for 14 million of the 24 million Americans who would lose their health insurance under Don't Care. Earlier this week, the White House announced that they are open to imposing a work requirement on Medicaid recipients (?!). Here's how you can help protect Medicaid.
45's Budget

45's proposed budget would slash funds for the EPA and science funding, the State Department, and public broadcasting. It would also funnel an additional $54 billion into defense programs, beef up immigration enforcement, and significantly reduce the non-defense federal workforce. It would even cut funding for Meals on Wheels (?!).

Sign the following petitions to stop 45's anti-science, anti-environment, pro-war, and yes, anti-senior citizens budget from being implemented:
  • March 31st - Stand for Rights ACLU Benefit: On Friday, March 31st, at 7pm ET/4pm PT, a benefit show for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) will be held in Brooklyn, NY, and livestreamed on Facebook. Find a show near you here:
  • 45's Tax Returns: This week, Rachel Maddow shared part of 45's 2005 tax returns on her show, proving that he paid a much, much lower tax rate than the average American, but it wasn't nearly enough. Use the following link to call your MoC and ask them to demand 45's complete tax returns: https://www.theloyalopposition.net/daily-ctas/daily-call-to-action-march-16th-2017/
  • War in Syria: Today, news broke that 45 plans to send 1,000 more American ground troops to Syria. Representative Barbara Lee has introduced legislation to stop this deployment. Use this link to email your representative and tell them to support this bill: http://action.winwithoutwar.org/p/dia/action4/common/public/?action_KEY=21397
  • Sebastian Gorka: Today, it was reported that 45's top counter-terrorism advisor, Sebastian Gorka, is a formal member of a Hungarian far-right group that is listed by the State Department as having been "under the direction of the Nazi Government of Germany" during World War II. Use this form to email 45 and Vice President Mike Pence and tell them to fire Gorka:
  • LGBTQ+ Issues: Yesterday, the Texas Senate passed SB6, a bill that bans transgender, non-binary, and intersex people from using restrooms in public schools, universities, and government offices. BREAKING - Muslim Ban 2.0

Today, a federal judge in Hawaii blocked 45's new Muslim ban just hours before it was supposed to go into effect, saying what is obvious to everyone: that it "targets Islam." Take a moment to celebrate this victory! 😃 Then help make sure that the ban is permanently rescinded.
Healthcare - Affordable Care Act

Republicans are getting nervous about their new healthcare bill, which I'm calling "Don't Care." Some Republican senators are saying that the bill won't pass without fundamental changes. They want to see lower insurance costs for poorer, older Americans and an increase in funding for states with many hard-to-insure people.

Conservative House Republicans are concerned that the bill is too generous (I guess 24 million people without healthcare coverage isn't enough for them?!). Here's how you can help keep up the pressure to stop Don't Care and protect the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
The Environment - Fuel Economy Standards

Today, 45 traveled to Detroit to announce a rollback of fuel economy standards for cars and trucks, which were put in place by the Obama administration. The fuel economy rules, aimed at cutting heat-trapping carbon dioxide, were one of the two main pillars of President Obama’s climate change legacy. Put forth in 2012, they would have required automakers to nearly double the average fuel economy of new cars and trucks to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. Here's how you can help stop 45 from rolling back these standards.
