45's Cabinet

Scott Pruitt, Environmental Protection Agency
Today, despite strong opposition, Scott Pruitt was confirmed to lead the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Pruitt is a climate denier with strong ties to the fossil fuel industry. As Attorney General of Oklahoma, Pruitt spent six years suing the EPA for its efforts to regulate pollution. He has stated that he thinks the EPA has too much authority over his friends in the fossil fuel industry, and that he wants to get rid of the agency altogether. How did your senators vote? Betsy DeVos, Secretary of Education
DeVos was the most contested of 45's nominees. Her confirmation vote was the first ever in American history to end in a tie, which was then decided by Vice President Mike Pence in her favor (of course). Criticisms of DeVos include her total lack of any education experience or qualifications, desire to privatize public schools, and apparent lack of concern for protecting students from sexual assault. Here's how you can help keep DeVos in check and protect American students:
  • Email your representative. In January, Congressman Steve King introduced HR 610, the School Choice Act, which would eliminate the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. Federal funds would be used instead to create "block grants" to be used to "distribute a portion of funds to parents who elect to enroll their child in a private school or to homeschool their child." It would also roll back nutritional standards for free lunches for poor children. It's clear that both DeVos and 45 would support HR 610. Use this form to email your representative and tell them to oppose HR 610 and protect public schools:
  • Tweet DeVos. 45's administration has made attempts to roll back legal protections for students from sexual assault on campus. DeVos now has the power to enforce these protections under Title IX, the federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in education, but in her nomination hearing, she would not commit to keeping the rules in place. She said "it would be premature" for her to commit to that. Despite demands from members of Congress and the public, Congressman Jason Chaffetz, Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, still refuses to investigate 45's ties to Russia. Instead, yesterday, he decided to seek criminal charges against a former State Department employee who helped set up Hillary Clinton's private email server (?!). That's right, while evidence is mounting that 45's administration committed treason and a foreign government influenced our presidential election, Chaffetz is still harping on Clinton's emails. Here's how you can help keep up the pressure on 45 and the Republican Congress and get the investigation started.
  • Call your members of Congress (MoC). Today, 55 lawmakers, led by House Democratic Caucus Chairman Congressman Joseph Crawley, signed a letter to Jeff Sessions asking him to recuse himself based on his ties to 45's campaign and key figures who have been alleged to have ties with Russia. Use the form and scripts at the following link to call your MoC and tell them to make a public statement demanding that Sessions step down:
  • Tweet 45. Copy and paste the follow Tweet to send 45 a secret message. It's an old Russian proverb which means, "The receiver is as bad as the thief." He can probably find someone to translate it for him:

Immigration - Muslim Ban

Today, 45 said that his administration will issue a new immigration order next week to replace his unconstitutional Muslim ban. Meanwhile, the Department of Justice released a 47-page report criticizing the Ninth Circuit Court ruling from last week. The Southern Poverty Law Center's recent hate crime report shows that anti-Muslim hate crime is steadily rising. Here's how you can help stand with and support Muslims in your community.
  • Watch a webinar recording. Earlier this week, EmergeUSA hosted a Refugee Advocacy Webinar, which discussed ways to advocate against 45's Muslim ban. If you missed it, you can watch a video recording of it here: https://youtu.be/DcdCTFx3Qo4
  • Share the Muslim Civil Rights Hotline. Muslim community members who believe that their rights have been violated may contact the Civil Rights Department at the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) at their hotline number, 202-742-6420, or submit a report at the following link. Please share this information with your friends and family:

  • Petition - 45's Tax Returns: On Tuesday, a House panel voted against requesting 45's tax returns from the Treasury Department. Democratic lawmakers argued that requesting the returns is important to get more information about 45's potential conflicts of interest. This White House petition to immediately release the returns now has over one million signatures. If you haven't already signed it, sign it now to keep the momentum going and let Congress know that the public wants to see the returns:
  • Petition - Consumer Financial Protection Bureau: 45 and Republicans in Congress have prepared a plan to gut the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), and corporate Democrats are already meeting with bankers to help them do it. Since it was created in 2011, the CFPB has returned roughly $11.8 billion to 29 million consumers. Sign this petition to tell Senate Democrats to oppose any changes that would undermine the CFPB:
  • Petition - Citizens United: Citizens United opened the floodgates on a torrent of unlimited, anonymous money and allowed special interests and billionaires to buy U.S. elections. That’s why Senate leaders just introduced a constitutional amendment to get wealthy special interest money out of our politics. Sign this petition to support the amendment:
  • Petition - Journalism is Not a Crime: On February 1st, Native American journalist Jenni Monet was arrested while reporting at Standing Rock. She’s now facing trespassing and riot charges. This is a press freedom violation and an obvious attempt to punish journalists who report on Standing Rock. Sign this petition to tell Morton County State's Attorney Allen Koppy and North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem  to drop all charges against Monet: http://act.freepress.net/sign/journ_nodapl_monet/
  • Petition - U.S. Women's Open: The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) is holding its most prestigious tournament, the 2017 U.S. Women's Open, at 45's New Jersey golf resort. Hundreds of people have flooded the LPGA with calls, urging them not to host the tournament at a serial sexual abuser's golf course. Even U.S. senators have urged them to cut ties with 45. Sign this petition to tell the LPGA not to hold the U.S. Women's Open on 45's golf course:
